‼️In yesterday’s post we debunked the idea o ‼️In yesterday’s post we debunked the idea of a β€˜nuclear button’, offering some solace in the fact that it’s not that simple.

But while there’s isn’t a button, there is a political football. Which, in reality, is a briefcase. With a biscuit.

Stay with us.

The American activation process is slightly more public, with a but more being known about their process.

The nuclear football is the nickname given to the briefcase that houses the document which contains all the information that any president could need. It is carried bye one of five military aids AT ALL TIMES - with each representing one arm of the US military.

The document itself is top secret, but it is known to carry an instructional guide, a list of locations that can be targeted, and details on the 1000 strong nuclear arsenal. The case also includes a radio transceiver and code authenticators.

Before authorising a strike, the President must first verify his identity, and offer the code that he carries at all times - or the biscuit as its caused.

Funny story. It’s alleged that during Clinton’s premiership, the biscuit was lost for months, but President Clinton failed to mention it.

Good job it wasn’t needed then ey? That would have taken the biscuit….

Ok, we’re done.

‼️Show of hands. How many of you have used, or ‼️Show of hands. How many of you have used, or heard the phrase β€˜press the button’ over the past week or so? A lot of us right? And you’d be forgiven for being slightly anxious.

After all, Russia’s unprovoked, illegal invasion of Ukraine has left the world feeling like an unjust, scary and uncertain place. But in this post, Politics4Youth wants to reassure you on one front - no one will be pressing any nuclear button.

The reason: there isn’t one.

It’s a common misconception that a nuclear strike - or even a war - could be started with some despot leader (names removed, cough, cough) spontaneously deciding to press the button. But it’s entirely incorrect and in fact the process is believed to be substantially more complicated.

Generally, each country has it’s own identified and pre-planned for launching a nuclear strike, and the details of those are not public. But what we do know is that there are checks and balances in place, with these protocols tending to cover most safety aspects.

For one, the nation’s leader would have to identify themselves via an outlined process, helping the military to ensure that it isn’t a foreign agent.

While it’s not much, it does ensure a slight distance between the decision being made and the actual strike being launched.

It’s not as simple as said leader having a few drinks and accidentally placing an elbow on the button waving bye bye to some far off nation.

Some countries have other checks in place, meaning that the decision has to be justified before the armed forces agree. While others do not.

That said, it’s generally accepted that there are safety measures in place to prevent a lone despot from deciding to set fire to the world.

The events of the last few days are hard to unders The events of the last few days are hard to understand and for those of us who’ve been privileged enough to grow up in peacetime, they’re unlikely anything we’ve ever seen before.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is abhorrent, it’s illegal, unprovoked and one of the worst acts of international aggression. And there is little more to say on the matter.

Today, apolitical content goes out the window, as Politics4Youth stands in solidarity with those affected by what has happened.

There’s a quote from my favourite movie, Pride, and it feels more appropriate today than ever before.

β€˜When you're in a battle against an enemy so much bigger, so much stronger than you, well, to find out you had a friend you never knew existed, well, that's the best feeling in the world.’

Educate yourselves on what is happening. And show solidarity with those living in Ukraine. There is little else to do, but sometimes friendship can go a long way.
